About The Walk
A circular walk along the Stroudwater canal to Westfield Bridge (the bridge was saved in 1969 by a woman who stood on it for a day to prevent workmen from blowing it up). This is the start of the “Missing Mile” project where a new canal will be constructed across open fields, passing under the M5 and joining the canal at the A38 roundabout. You will learn how plans are progressing, the key role of volunteers on the project, the engineering design challenges and the strategic benefits of the project; for our communities, environment, heritage and economic development.
Stopping for a break in Coneygree Community orchard, Eastington we return via fields south of the river Frome, past a weir, viaduct and beyond to finish at the Old Chapel Garden for tea & cakes.
Walk Leader: Chris Mitford-Slade Project Director of Cotswold Canals Connected
(a partnership including Cotswold Canals Trust, Stroud Valleys Canal Company, Stroud District Council, Gloucestershire County Council and the Canal & River Trust)
